LIHU‘E — Island School’s Pierce Murphy headed over to O‘ahu, Saturday, to participate in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu track meet.
After just running in the Boys 800 Meter event at Friday’s Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation to keep himself rested, Murphy took on 43 other runners in the Boys 1,500 Meter Run, finishing first with a time of 4:11.89.
His closest competitor was Isaiah Sato of Kamehameha, who finished more than five seconds off the pace at 4:17.49.
Murphy’s time ranks as tops in the state to this point of the 2010 outdoor season. He also holds the fastest time in the 3000 Meters at 9 minutes, 21 seconds.
Murphy will be heading to Maui on Friday to participate in the Blue and Gold Invitational, a two-day meet that he also participated in last year, coming home with a gold in the 3000 Meters and a silver in the 1,500 Meters.
The KIF has a number of top track performances so far this season.
Waimea’s Moses Fierro, who brought back a surprising gold medal last year at the HHSAA state meet, holds the top Boys 200 Meter Dash time at 22.11 seconds.
Kaua‘i High School’s Darren Acoba has the top time in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles with 15.11 seconds.
Waimea’s Torrey Santiago grabbed the lead in the Boys Long Jump with a distance of 21 feet, 6 1/4 inches.
The Waimea Boys 4×100 Meter Relay team has been the fastest to this point, stopping the clock at 43.39 seconds.
Kapa‘a’s Kevin Marshall Adkisson currently sits in second in the state for the Boys Discus, coming away with a distance of 152 feet, 5 inches at the OIA Velasco Invitational Meet on O‘ahu.
Waimea’s Malcolm Carter and Santiago sit in second and third place, respectively, in the Boys Triple Jump.
On the girls’ side, Kaua‘i’s Kawehi Louis-Diamond has the second-best Girls 100 Meter Hurdles time at 16.07 seconds, while also third in the 300 Meter Hurdles at 49.40.
Waimea’s Jayme Jacinto is also in the top four statewide for the same two hurdle events.
The next KIF track meet will take place at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
