LIHU‘E — In a cost-cutting measure on furlough Fridays when traffic is generally lighter due to closure of schools and certain state offices, the state Department of Transportation in a press release advised Kaua‘i motorists that the Kuhio Highway morning rush-hour contraflow lane from Kapa‘a to Hanama‘ulu will not be installed on government furlough Fridays, beginning today.
Contraflow operations will be suspended on furlough Fridays until further notice, the release states.
Traffic conditions through the Hanama‘ulu corridor will be monitored and evaluated to determine the impacts to traffic flow. Motorists are advised to use caution and to follow normal, non-contraflow traffic patterns when the contraflow lane is not coned.
Besides today, the other furlough Friday dates on which the contraflow lane will be closed are: Thursday, April 1; and the following Fridays: April 9, April 23 and April 30; May 7, May 14, May 21 and May 28; June 4; Thursday, June 10; and the last two Fridays in June: June 18 and June 25.
The Kuhio Highway contraflow lane creates an additional southbound lane from the southern end of the Kapa‘a bypass road to the Kuhio Highway/Kapule Highway intersection during morning rush-hour between 6 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on weekdays, excluding holidays.
