KAPA‘A — The two teams that will be vying for the 2010 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball championship each ended their regular seasons on a winning note Wednesday night, as they now head into Saturday’s title game.
The Kapa‘a Warriors (10-2) notched a 61-35 win over the Waimea Menehune (5-7) at Kapa‘a High School, while the Kaua‘i Red Raiders (9-3) finished with a 65-45 win over the Island School Voyagers (0-12) at Kaua‘i High School.
The Raiders, having won Round 1 of the regular season with a 5-1 record, and Warriors, the clear Round 2 winners with a perfect 6-0 mark, are set to square off for the fifth time this season to determine a champ.
Kapa‘a has had the recent edge in the series, taking the past three meetings after Kaua‘i came out on top in the season-opener.
Saturday’s title contest will take place at Kapa‘a High School after a coin flip to determine the site resulted in the Warriors’ favor. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Wednesday’s Senior Night activities at both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a gave the home teams early momentum, which they used to run away with lopsided victories.
Kapa‘a held a 29-20 lead at halftime, then Waimea cut the deficit to six after a Micah Rita 3-pointer right out of the gate.
From there the Warriors made the game-altering run, outscoring the Menehune 28-5 over the next 10 minutes of action.
Duke Pauli scored 14 points for the Warriors, while Stephen Greenleaf and Sean Shigematsu each scored 12.
Kekoa Colipano had nine, point guard Bradley Coloma had seven and Span Lindsey finished with three.
James Padre and Arnel Tangonan each chipped in two points.
The Menehune were led by Malcolm Carter’s 14 points.
Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo scored five, and Paul Oligo and Rita each had three.
Kalen McCracken, Xavier Guirao, VJ Carineo, Princeton Gee and Kody Saio all scored two points apiece for Waimea.
The Raiders got their victory behind 13 points each from Bryan Andres and Davone Florence. Austin Simao added 11.
Canaan Higa was the game’s high scorer with 17 points for the Voyagers.
In JV action at Kapa‘a, Waimea suffered its first JV loss of the season in a 42-36 defeat at the hands of Kapa‘a.
Daniel Reis, James Paik and Adam Clark each had eight points for the Warriors, with Kainoa Colipano adding seven.
Chester Dikilato had six, Kawika Wellington and Cy Whitlock each had two and Keani Kinzi had one.
Kaili Schumacher-Lagundino led the Menehune with 19 points.
Brandon Palacio had six, Travis Soares five and Chase Parongao and Niko Delos Reyes had four and two points, respectively.
