County receives clean audit
The county auditor, Ernesto Pasion, announced that the results of the independent financial audit for the county for the fiscal year ending June 2009 have been posted on the county auditor’s Web site. The audit, conducted by the firm of RC Holsinger Associates PC, resulted in a clean audit opinion, according to a county news release.
Also posted on the county auditor’s Web site are the auditor’s letters documenting the results of the Single Audit of the county for the same period. The Single Audit is an annual audit required by federal law, and is intended to ensure that the county is expending federal funds properly.

Makai Golf Club now open
Troon Golf, an upscale golf course management, development and marketing company is pleased to announce the Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort located on Kaua‘i’s North Shore has reopened for play. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. — the original architect who designed the course — led the course enhancement project, which included reconfiguring the strategy of greens complexes. Improvements also include bold reshaping of the bunkers; refurbishment of selected cart paths and comfort stations; and upgrading the practice facility to include two large practice tees, a practice fairway bunker, eight target greens with bunkers, a teaching tee, and short-game practice complex. Plans for a new clubhouse will be implemented in the next phase of the project.

Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i’s new service
Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i, Inc. is proud to announce the opening of a new professional counseling service which began in January. Therapist Mary Navarro is a licensed marriage and family therapist and is available to provide counseling support for individuals, couples, children, adolescents, and families. With a background in child development, Navarro has worked in schools, non-profits and private practice for the past 23 years, with the last 10 years in Hawai‘i.
One specialty area is helping parents learn strategies to work more effectively with schools to find ways to help their child or adolescent improve both their behavior and their school performance. Navarro said she enjoys working with adolescents to help them deal effectively with life’s many struggles, and helping parents learn new strategies to improve their relationships with their teens.
Individual, couple and family counseling are available to learn new strategies to deal with symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD or ADD, anger, grief, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, substance use, eating disorders, and other issues.

Filipino Chamber of Commerce awards
Several members of the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce were given the “Distinguished Service Awards” during the 10th anniversary awards and installation dinner held at the Kaua‘i Marriott Jan. 30.
The honorees were:
— Entrepreneurship: Robert “Bobby” Ayonon (President of Kaua‘i Air Condition & Refrigeration)
— Community Service: Teofilo “Phil” Tacbian (KIUC Board Chairman)
— Education: Mabel Jean Odo (Pre-School Research Teacher)
— Healthcare: Kathy Clark (President & CEO of Wilcox Memorial Hospital)
— Medicine: Dr. Mariano Torres, (President of Mariano Torres, MD, Inc.).
Oscar Portugal (founding President of the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce) received the “President Emeritus” award.
More than 400 people attended the gala event with Jim Tollefson (president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai‘i) as keynote speaker. Lesther Calipjo, owner of Kaua‘i Foreign Cars was installed as president of the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce. Dickie Chang and Elizabeth Freeman were the emcees of the evening ceremony.
KEO hosts volunteer recognition event
Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity honored its approximately 120 volunteers through an afternoon high tea Oct. 26, 2009 at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center. Jessie Basquez, mediation director, and Celia Melchor-Questin, elderly programs Director, were the event coordinators.
KEO has more than 29 community service programs that help financially-disadvantaged individuals and families. Volunteers help with some of the programs.
KEO Certificates of Appreciation were distributed to all of the volunteers who attended by CEO MaBel Ferreiro-Fujiuchi and Board Chairman Brenda Viado. The keynote speaker was Sam Aiona who is the executive director of the Office of Community Services.
