The deadline for registering for the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association is Feb. 19, said Mary Bea Porter-King, president of the KJGA, in an e-mail.
“It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s rewarding, and anyone can play,” Porter-King said. “Young and old, beginners to advanced, golfers and aspiring golfers between the ages of 7 through 18 can come out and join the 2010 KJGA program.”
In addition to learning about the game of golf, KJGA members make new friends, get re-acquainted with old friends and become a part of the growing trend of youngsters enjoying the game of golf, today, Porter-King said.
The KJGA was founded in the 1960s by four prominent Kaua‘i golfers, Chica Ishii, Mitchell Ota, Toyo Shirai and Tom Tomimoto, states the KJGA Web site.
These men loved golf, but also shared a desire to introduce youngsters to the sport and had a willingness to help young golfers develop their golf skills.
KJGA is proud to be able to carry on what these four men started more than 40 years ago. Since its inception, the KJGA program has seen hundreds of Junior Golfers develop into avid golfers, many advancing to compete nationally on the amateur, collegiate and professional levels after leaving the KJGA program.
Dedicated parents, businesses, golf professionals, KJGA officers, group leaders and Board members contribute to the success and growth of Junior Golfers and can be found at any of the KJGA events.
The objective of the KJGA is to provide an environment where its members can enjoy the game of golf, progressing at his, or her own rate while promoting and preserving the traditions and integrity of the game.
Once registered, Junior Golfers start with lessons during the week of March 2 and culminates during the summer when qualified Juniors compete in statewide and national tournaments. This is followed with fun-oriented monthly tournaments until mid-December.
