LIHU‘E — Hale ‘Opio Kauai, supporter of programs for children, youth and families is throwing a benefit purse auction and high tea in May to raise funds for at-risk youth.
Fashioned after a program in Maryland, “Passion for Purses” will auction stuffed handbags, totes and purses with themed fillings. The majority of the filled bags will be part of a silent auction with a few specialty bags reserved for the live auction.
“You can donate a new purse or one you have tucked away in a closet that’s never been used,” said executive director Mary Navarro. “Or donate fillings for a purse.”
Navarro says “anything goes” theme-wise.
Some of the donations to date include a pet carrier stuffed with cat toys, food, treats, magazines, cards and even the stuffed cat. Some of the themes so far range from sports totes with gift certificates and attire; a golf themed purse and beach bags equipped with all the necessities for a day in the sun and sand.
“You can go wild just thinking about themes,” she said. “Ever since we began planning this all I see are purses.”
The event was intentionally scheduled one week before Mother’s Day to entice women to come with their moms.
“This is a fun women’s event and something completely different,” she said.
The purse auction and tea will also include sandwiches and snacks, as well as a passion fruit cocktail created especially for the event.
Navarro encourages early registration as there are only 240 seats available. But in the meantime, consider donating a tote, handbag, purse or the filling for one.
“Passion for Purses” is from noon to 4 p.m. May 2 at Kauai Beach Resort. KHON2 newscaster Ron Mizutani will be the master of ceremonies.
Tickets are $40 and available by calling, 245-2873, ext. 221 or visit haleopio.org.
