LIHU‘E — If you have a headache or are suffering from muscle cramps, you will have to find something other than Tylenol or Motrin to ease your pain.
Walmart and other retailers have pulled the products from their shelves as part of a massive recall because of a moldy smell that has made people sick.
“You won’t find them anywhere,” a Walmart clerk said Sunday.
McNeil Consumer Healthcare announced on Jan. 15 a voluntary recall of certain over-the-counter products, such as Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and Rolaids.
“The company is initiating this recall following an investigation of consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that, in a small number of cases, was associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal events,” according to the press release. “These include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.”
The “uncharacteristic smell” has been linked to “the breakdown of a chemical that is sometimes applied to wood that is used to build wood pallets that transport and store product packaging materials.”
The situation is being monitored and evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
It was the second such recall in less than a month because of the smell, which regulators said Friday was first reported to McNeil in 2008, the Associated Press reports. Federal regulators criticized the company, saying it didn’t respond to the complaints quickly enough, wasn’t thorough in how it handled the problem and didn’t inform the Food and Drug Administration quickly.
