LIHU‘E — With the recent winter storms that affected households in Hanalei and Keapana Valley with road closures, property damage, and flooding, the Kaua‘i Red Cross is emphasizing the need for more pre-trained volunteers and has scheduled Disaster Services Training for interested individuals.
Three course sessions will be held Jan. 15-17 at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville: Fulfilling Our Mission, an introduction to the American Red Cross held that Friday, from 6-9 p.m.; Mass Care/Shelter Operations and Shelter Simulation on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Disaster Action Team Orientation on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Each of these courses provides instruction in disaster response for volunteers; whether it is to assist an individual or family with residential damage or to provide island-wide shelter and mass care. All Disaster Services classes are offered free of charge to any individual willing to help those in need, a news release states.
“The ideal time to train more volunteers is not during a disaster; it is best to have Disaster Action Team members trained and ready to respond on a moment’s notice” said Julia Hall, Kaua‘i Red Cross county director. “If you are interested in making a difference and serving your local community by being a Red Cross volunteer, please join us and sign up for these classes.”
Pre-registration is required; pre-register at www.hawaiiredcross.org or call the Lihu‘e office at 245-4919.
