LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Red Raiders girls varsity soccer squad won another mostly one-sided game after topping the Waimea Lady Menehune 7-0 in the day’s final action, Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
In the teams’ previous meeting, the Raiders won a 6-0 final at Hanapepe Stadium and this time bested their output by one.
Kaua‘i’s Lisa Tangalin got the scoring started in the fifth minute when Isabelle Curtis sent a high-arcing cross from the right side toward the back post. Tangalin and Brandi Briones — Waimea’s starting goalie — both attacked the ball and basically collided amidst their efforts. Tangalin managed to deflect the ball by Briones and into the net for the early 1-0 lead.
Briones had another collision minutes later when Kaua‘i’s Teal Basquez made a run for the ball and made contact with Briones. She remained down for a bit, holding her back, as the trainer then helped her off the field.
Jayme Jacinto put on her goalie gear and stepped into net for the Lady Menehune.
She would face a tough offensive attack, which began as Dayna Fujii chased down a deep ball that had gotten by Waimea’s defense in the box. She gathered on the right side and angled a grounder by Jacinto for the goal in the 14th minute.
Basquez had two chances to score shortly after, first striking the post with a shot, then making a run at the net but lost control when her second touch was too strong and scooped by Jacinto.
Jessica Crane had better luck when she was unmarked and received a cross from Tangalin. She took her time and put the ball into the right side of the net for a 3-0 advantage.
In the 35th minute, Cascade Mayer put in the fourth goal on a straight-on shot from the point, the half’s final score.
Malia Kagawa, Tyra Tandal and Kylie Tanaguchi all added scores in the second half for the Raiders, who will now be off until Jan. 6, when they will play the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
The Lady Menehune will host Kapa‘a at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
In varsity boys action, the Waimea Menehune pulled out a tight 1-0 win over the Kaua‘i Red Raiders.
The game’s lone goal was scored by Kevin Killermann in the 30th minute.
Jordan Kitabayashi made a bid to add to Waimea’s lead in the second half, taking a free kick from the left side of the pitch.
The ball was on line and went just over the leaping goalie’s outstretched arms, but skimmed just across the top of the crossbar and out of bounds.
Kaua‘i had an opportunity to tie when it put together a couple good touches inside the box as Waimea goalie Beau Acoba went to the ground.
Yet a Menehune defender got a foot on the ball to clear it out to the side.
In Saturday morning action, the Kapa‘a Warriors varsity boys took a 3-1 win over Island at Island School.
Kaisen Carrillo opened the scoring with a Kapa‘a goal in the ninth minute, but Island’s Austin Taylor answered right back in the 11th minute to even the contest.
There was no scoring for the remainder of the half, but Brycen Phillips put in the game-winner in the 47th minute for Kapa‘a.
Maximillian Drubba added a score in the 60th.
The Warriors will be on the road again Saturday, facing Waimea at 1:30 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
Island will travel to Kaua‘i at 10 a.m. Saturday at Vidinha.
