LIHU‘E — For a few hours Friday, the rotunda of the Mo‘ikeha Building echoed with song and holiday cheer.
The annual Holly Jolly event hosted by the County Employees Council revealed the talents of workers from the county’s various departments as they sang, oftentimes in full regalia, to impress judges Mike Dandurand, Jason Fujinaka and Tim Mira.
When the dust settled, the Fire Department recruits saved Christmas and topped the competition. The County Attorney’s Office earned second place and Public Works filled in the third spot.
Kaleo Carvalho of The Kaua‘i Bus was busy last week juggling decorating the bus for the Lights on Rice parade and trying to finish a wreath for the Mayor’s Wreath Contest.
The Kaua‘i Bus entry did not place Friday, but Elderly Affairs picked up top honors in the Traditional category followed by the Finance and Personnel departments.
Parks and Recreation used the choicest materials it could find to top the Hawaiian category of the wreath contest. Second place honors went to the Liquor Department followed by the County Attorney’s Office placing third.
Kaua‘i County Councilman Dickie Chang emceed the event which saw Willie Cummings and Billy Swain make guest appearances with musical numbers.
Eddie Sarita and the War Memorial Convention Hall staff provided the seating with desserts being headed up by “Dessert Queen” Donna Gabriel.
