PUHI — Thieves recently made off with a boat motor, battery and steering console valued at nearly $4,000.
The items were taken off a boat used by state Department of Transportation Highways Division personnel to inspect bridges and do other on-water work, said Willy S. Ortal, DOT-Highways maintenance engineer.
The items were discovered missing from the Puhi DOT-Highways baseyard Nov. 13.
Ortal said the boat was used about a month ago, and is normally used to inspect bridges, investigate issues with designs of bridges, assist contractors, and for other purposes.
The motor is a rare type not common on the island, said Ortal, who hopes to recover it.
In the meantime, he might have to rent a boat if inspections or other work is necessary before the motor and other equipment are replaced.
Anyone with information on the motor, equipment or theft may call Ortal, 241-3032, or Kaua‘i Police dispatch, 241-1711.
