KIF cheer championships tomorrow
The Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation’s annual cheerleading championship will be held on Saturday at the Waimea High School gym. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 5 p.m.
Kaua’i’s outstanding varsity cheer athletes from Kapa’a, Kaua’i, and Waimea High Schools will all present competitive routines packed with stunts, tumbling, jumps, dance, and high-energy crowd leadership.
Special guests including Excel Dance, Kuga House Dance and the 2009 Pop Warner Kaua’i championship squads, which will also perform at the Championship event.
The winning team of the KIF Cheerleading Championship will advance to compete in the State Championship set for Dec. 13 at the Stan Sheriff Center on O‘ahu. Last year, the Menehunes of Waimea High School proudly represented Kaua’i at States, finishing strong in fourth place in the Large Varsity division.
Ross Shimabukuro of Kaua’i High School serves as the Athletic Director in charge of cheerleading for Kaua’i, and will once again direct this year’s competition with the assistance of host site Athletic Director, Jon Kobayashi.
In addition to naming the 2009 championship squad, the KIF Cheerleading Championship results will also announce KIF All Star First Team and Second Team honorees, as well as the 2009 KIF Cheer Coach of the Year recipient.
Cheerleading was officially recognized in Hawai‘i as a high school sport in 1991.
