LIHU‘E — Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. on Tuesday issued a disaster declaration effective Nov. 13 to 20, with the possibility of an extension, a county news release said Wednesday.
Pursuant to Article XVIII, Section 18.02 of the Kaua‘i County Charter, the mayor is authorized to make such a declaration in order to promote and protect the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the County of Kaua‘i.
Last Saturday, Kaua‘i experienced heavy rain and severe flash flooding that resulted in widespread damage to public and private property.
The ongoing effects of this disaster have caused economic loss and hardships particularly to the farmers in Hanalei Valley, the release says.
