As a tribute to Gabby Pahinui, the Hawaiian Slack Key Festival began in 1982. According to the festival Website, Pahinui was one of the few who led the way for what is now referred to as the “Hawaiian Renaissance.” Through his music and style, he inspired young Hawaiians to be proud of their cultural heritage.
The 17th Annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival features the states finest musicians. On the bill this year are long time favorites Jeff Peterson, Makana, John Cruz, LT Smooth, Keale, Bobby Moderow, Donald Kaulia, Stephen Inglis and musician, composer and veteran of the Hawaiian Music Industry Ken Makuakane. Kaua‘i artists include Paul Togioka, Cindy Combs and Sandy and Doug McMaster.
The festival is from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hilton Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa. Entry is a $5 donation that goes to the Kiho‘alu Foundation.
