KAPA‘A — She was not as quick in the water as her competitor in the next lane, but Alexandra Croydon battled through several lead changes to win the second heat of the Girls 100 Yard Butterfly event, Sunday.
Croydon won what may have been the heat of the event on a swim of 1:51.26, bettering her previous swim by 3.57 seconds.
The swim in the Butterfly event was just one of nine personal-best times achieved by the 11-year-old at the Mokihana Aquatics Unclassified Meet, held Saturday at the Waimea Pool and Sunday at the Kapa‘a Pool.
Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando “O” Anaya said the meet was held to help swimmers prepare for an upcoming off-island swim meet.
“We usually do this kind of timed trials about three weeks ahead so the swimmers have time to work on their weaknesses,” Anaya said.
Croydon’s best event came in the 200 Individual Medley where she trimmed 15.91 seconds off her previous swim, stopping the clock at 3:38.28. She also whacked 15.33 seconds off her 200 Freestyle swim, stopping the clock at 3:16.69.
She finished with three Hawai‘i B times in the 50 Breast (49.63), 50 Free (37.10) and the 100 Breast (1:49.92).
“I have never had an easier time picking a Swimmer of the Meet in my 29 years of coaching,” Anaya said in an e-mail. “Congratulations to Alex Croydon for having a meet that was overwhelmingly spectacular.”
Some of the other noteworthy swims include a 16.41 improvement by Shasta Behling Camero, 11, in the 200 IM (3:33.71), Kayla Ishida, 11, taking 9.37 off her 100 Back (1:19.71 HIAA), Micah-Kamuela Nobriga-Ferris taking 23.32 off his 200 Back (3:41.89), Kaikea Roe, 12, knocking 14.82 off his 100 Back (1:37.07 HI-B) and 30.23 off his 200 IM (3:28.60 HI-B), 20.96 off his 200 Free (3:03.93 HI-B) and 13.61 off his 100 Breast (1:52.58 HI-B), Gracie Stokes, 10, taking 12.10 off her 200 IM (4:11.46) and Jane Wilmot, 12, knocking 9.37 off her 100 Fly (1:56.43).
According to the Hawai‘i Swim Web site, the next Unclassified Meet will be hosted by Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics on Nov. 21 at the YMCA pool starting at 9 a.m.
Dan Britzmann and SKA coach Billy Brown are the meet directors.
