LIHU‘E — There has been a slight uptick in the number of vandalism cases investigated by the Kaua‘i Police Department, according to a department spokesman.
Visible evidence of recent senseless acts of vandalism includes downed signs and mailboxes along Rice Street in Lihu‘e and Kuhio Highway in the Waipouli area, and other places around the island.
According to Alejandre Quibilan, acting assistant chief in KPD’s Patrol Services Bureau, September’s total of 84 cases of vandalism investigated marked a multi-month high (see chart).
Kaua‘i resident Robert Romero provided a photo showing an obliterated toilet at Wailua Homesteads Park. The repair took about a week and cost county taxpayers over $330.
Parts were $265, and three hours of a plumber’s labor at $22.23 an hour added $66.69 to the job. The work was finished a week after the act of vandalism was reported, said Mary Daubert, county public information officer.
