LIHU‘E — Kayla Ishida was nervous, said Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando “O” Anaya.
“This was her first invite and you should have seen her so nervous,” Anaya said in an e-mail.
But that nervousness never showed in the water as Ishida, one of three Mokihana entries to the 10th Annual Bill Smith Invitational at the Veterans’ Memorial Center on O‘ahu, posted a perfect meet.
Ishida, 11, finished the meet with improvements in all five of the events she swam in, her biggest showing coming in the 200 Freestyle where she finished at 2:36.14, an improvement of 8.85 over her seeded time.
Ishida ended the meet with five HIAA times in her events.
Kaleiu‘i Hosaka, 10, came close to a perfect meet, posting improvements in seven of the eight events she swam, but finishing with three qualifying times and five HIAA times.
Hosaka, the youngest of the three Mokihana swimmers, posted her best event in the 200 Individual Medley, stopping the clock at 3:14.54 for a 10.10 improvement and a HIAA time.
Kaitlin Santos, 14, the team leader for the group, finished with two qualifying times in eight events.
