LIHU‘E — The Waimea Lady Menehune control their own destiny with two matches remaining in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball season. One win in the team’s final two contests will clinch the best record in the season’s second half, making a playoff moot and awarding them a KIF title.
Since Waimea (10-0) already has the first half title in its pocket, winning the second half outright would provide a well-deserved championship for a thus far perfect season.
However, both the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors and Kaua‘i Red Raiders still have a say in the season’s outcome, starting with Kaua‘i.
Kaua‘i (6-4) sits at 2-2 in the season’s second half and can provide some drama to Saturday’s season finales with a win tonight at Waimea High School. If the Raiders can close out with two victories (at Waimea, vs. Island School), they would then have to hope that Waimea would also lose Saturday’s match at Kapa‘a High School.
Those circumstances, plus a Kapa‘a victory tonight, would put all three of those teams at 4-2 and a playoff for the second-half champion would be in order. At that point, Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i would have the opportunity to force a season playoff for the league title.
However, all these scenarios will be unnecessary if Waimea is simply able to win one more time, something that they have continued to do all year. The Raiders and Lady Warriors will have to change up tactics to top a Menehune squad that has been the strongest and most difficult matchup throughout the season.
Kaua‘i came the closest in the teams’ previous meeting, taking the match to a fifth and decisive game, ultimately losing 15-13 in the finale.
Tonight’s varsity matches at Waimea and Island School are scheduled to begin no earlier than 6:30 p.m., preceded by JV play.
