LIHU‘E —With eight of the Waimea High School girls shooting over 200 scores, the Menehune wahine locked up the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air riflery title with an 1,120-1,089 win over Kaua‘i High School on Thursday.
The Menehune girls’ win was one half of a Waimea sweep as the boys took an 1,124-1,081 win over Kaua‘i High School.
“We won both sides,” said Victor Aguilar, coach of the Waimea team. “That makes the girls, currently undefeated, the KIF champions. The boys are tied with Kaua‘i High School with each having one loss each.”
With just one more remaining match for both schools, if Kaua‘i boys and Waimea boys win their respective matches, that would force a shootout for the KIF title.
“We were missing some of our guys and they were missing some guys, so it could get very interesting,” Aguilar said prior to the match.
Kaua‘i High School travels to Island School, enjoying a split against Kapa‘a, while Waimea hosts Kapa‘a in the final match of the season, Thursday.
“We were missing two of our top five boys, and Sam Lang had a problem with his weapon,” said Ross Shimabukuro, athletic director of Kaua‘i High School. “Sam’s problem cost him at least 30 points.”
Waimea girls locked up the title with solid performances from Amber Duldulao (90-88-55-233), Melissa Kagawa (87-90-52-229), Bessie Baclig (85-76-66-227), Dyan Tabalan (83-76-60-219) and Brandi Briones (83-75-54-212).
Taylor Ludington (86-79-51-216) returned to the top five for Kaua‘i, finishing in a solid No. 3 spot. Brianne Hornos (87-72-79-238) and Delissa Nobriga (83-77-74-234) continue to lead the Kaua‘i girls with Meghan Fujimoto (85-62-54-201) and Kristyn Yamamotoya (69-79-52-200) rounding out the top five.
John Medeiros topped the Waimea boys’ win on a 237 (88-75-74) showing followed by Bryle Rivera (91-71-67-229), Marius Foudila (84-83-54-221), Benigno Baclig (81-81-58-220) and Austin Kunishige (83-70-64-217).
Shaun Koide took the lead for Kaua‘i on a 253 (95-89-69) showing, the highest score at the Kaua‘i complex. He was followed by Bryce Diogo (92-85-46-223), Travis Navarro (78-81-49-208), Walter Castillo (86-64-51-201) and Lang (86-64-51-201).
Cole Moore finished with a personal best 214 (81-67-66) to help lead the Island School boys to a 1028-908 showing over Kapa‘a at the Kapa‘a facility.
That performance was just below J. Riley Louis (85-82-50-217), the consistent leader for Island School. The pair was followed by Logan Domingo (82-68-55-205), Marcus Punua (81-44-74-199) and Aaron Rozon (73-73-47-193).
Thomas Woods (76-74-50-200) paced the Kapa‘a boys followed by Adam Clark (88-75-34-197) and Hunter Bilbo (83-52-56-191).
Kapa‘a girls saw Mary Walker (78-79-36-193) and Jessica Pasodava (67-64-55-186) lead the team to an 884-754 win over four Island School shooters.
Piilani Kali (78-71-64) and Lindsey Duarte (78-72-63) finished the day with personal best scores at 213 each, said Sean Magoun, the Island School coach. Stephanie Steuri (75-69-52) finished at 196.
