Saturday was the Red Cross’ Heroes Breakfast, and Mary Jane Moore was honored as the Kaua‘i County volunteer of the year, a news release says.
Moore has been a Red Cross volunteer since 1942. She began by teaching home nursing and later became a water safety instructor.
For the past 15 years, Moore has taught blood borne pathogens, preventing disease transmission, and basic HIV to 2,770 people. These classes ranged from one-on-one training to 50- to 60-student classes, the release says.
Moore is so passionate about the need for HIV and hepatitis education that she has literally taken the lead on this issue and is responsible for all of the classes taught by the Hawai‘i Red Cross on this subject.
