HANAKAPI‘AI — A 52-year-old visitor from Vancouver, Canada was airlifted from Hanakapi‘ai Beach Thursday afternoon after sustaining leg injuries and was unable to walk out on his own, a county press release states.
He was taken to Wilcox Hospital via ambulance. His current condition is not known.
The call about the injured hiker came through at around 1 p.m. A lifeguard from the Ke‘e tower responded on a jet ski and was the first on scene. He then contacted Police Dispatch and verified the location of the hiker and the extent of his injuries.
Rescue personnel from the Lihu‘e fire station were picked up at Lihu‘e Airport by Jack Harter Helicopters and transported to Hanakapi‘ai Beach. They airlifted the injured hiker to Princeville Airport, where awaiting medics then transported him to Wilcox Hospital.
Jack Harter Helicopters generally charges the county $1,050 per hour for rescue operations, county officials said this week.
