LIHU‘E — When he was one of Kaua‘i’s Most Wanted criminals last month, Christopher Allen Bond was described by police as slippery, evading Kaua‘i Police Department officers trying to speak to him about alleged theft from a Kaua‘i Chevron gas station he managed.
On Tuesday before 5th Circuit Judge Randal Valenciano, he was without an attorney and apparently ready to offer his not-guilty plea without the benefit of representation at his scheduled arraignment and plea.
When Bond, 24, appeared sans attorney, he told Valenciano his attorney would be available Wednesday, but seemed to indicate he was ready to plead not guilty to charges of theft and falsifying business records.
Valenciano continued Bond’s case to Wednesday, when O‘ahu attorney Clayton Kimoto represented Bond and entered not-guilty pleas for a first-degree theft charge and 43 counts of falsifying business records.
Kimoto requested a jury trial and bail study for Bond, who is being held at Kaua‘i Community Correction Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Bond has a last known Kaua‘i address in Koloa but listed a Mainland address when he was arrested by KPD officers on the charges last month.
On Tuesday, he wore blue jeans, a long-sleeve blue and white dress shirt, slippers and leg shackles. On Wednesday, he wore the orange prison jumpsuit with “KCCC” on the back, slippers and leg shackles.
He is accused of stealing $34,000 in cash and falsifying 43 business records, according to an earlier county press release. Bond was picked up by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in Ohio.
KPD officers said via e-mail that Bond appeared before a judge in Ohio, told the judge he was returning to Kaua‘i to turn himself in and the judge released him.
Bond didn’t do that immediately, though, so was still wanted here until his arrest last month, KPD officers said.
An arrest warrant was issued for Bond in late April of this year, according to state court records.
His trial date has been set for mid-January before 5th Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe, Valenciano said. Any motions, such as those for release on Bond’s own recognizance or other matters, would be taken up by Watanabe, he added.
