LIHU‘E — Elections for the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative Board of Directors were set for Saturday, March 27, 2010 during the board’s monthly meeting Tuesday.
First-term Director Steve Rapozo, the chair and only member of the Nominating Committee, floated the date, which was approved unanimously by the rest of the board.
Directors are elected to three-year terms, with three spots up for election each year and up to nine total directors serving on the board. In 2009, Rapozo, Ben Sullivan and Stu Burley earned seats at the table.
In 2010, Directors David Iha, the board secretary, Allan Smith, the board treasurer, and Carol Bain will see their terms expire and will need to run for re-election if they would like to continue to serve.
Furthermore, the spot vacated by former board Chair Dennis Esaki earlier this year remains unfilled. His term runs through 2011, and attorney David Proudfoot explained Tuesday that the co-op’s bylaws do not permit a special election to fill that position.
Thus far, the board has declined to replace Esaki, who appeared at Tuesday’s meeting and provided a report from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association on which he represents Kaua‘i and KIUC.
Financial considerations are believed to be a factor in the decision to operate with just eight directors.
Rapozo said Tuesday that it would be premature to discuss potential nominees for the three positions up for election.
