KALAHEO — The National Tropical Botanical Garden will host its first Breadfruit Bounty Cookoff in celebration of this generous and beautiful tree from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at NTBG’s Southshore Visitors Center (across from Spouting Horn) in Po‘ipu.
Here is the chance to taste warm ‘ulu sashimi carpaccio with Waipa greens, traditional roasted ‘ulu with corned beef, “fudge” ‘ulu pie with candied ‘ulu or Polynesian breadfruit medley.
Experience breadfruit like never before at this fun-filled family event and check out this important healthful Hawaiian food in a whole new way as Kaua‘i cooks present ‘ulu appetizers, soups and salads, main dishes and desserts during the center’s monthly ‘Ohana Day.
Pre-registered breadfruit recipes and dishes will be poked, prodded, tasted and tested by a panel of judges and ‘ulu experts including Faye Hirayama, author of “The Breadfruit Cookbook;” Glenn Goldsmith, NTBG trustee and founder of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc.; John Ferguson, chef and owner of Kalaheo Café and Coffee Co.; Pam Woolway, food writer for The Garden Island newspaper and Pamela Brown, editor of Kaua‘i People.
Prepared original ‘ulu dishes will be on display from 11 to 11:30 a.m. with an interactive keiki breadfruit station from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a breadfruit presentation by NTBG’s Breadfruit Institute director Dr. Diane Ragone from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with contest winners awarded between 12:30 and 1 p.m. All breadfruit dishes will be offered as tasting samples for a nominal fee on a first-come, first-served basis after 1:30 p.m.
