HANAPEPE — Kapa‘a and Lihu‘e Junior Pee Wee teams and Kapa‘a and Koloa Junior Midget teams scored opening records as the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League opened its 2009 season Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium. Kapa‘a Eagles JPW shut down Kekaha 13-0 behind scoring runs of 12 yards and 17 yards by Bryce Dato and Thomas Yam, respectively.
Following Yam’s touchdown at that with 1:41 remaining in the half, he took the ball in for the point-after to complete the day’s scoring.
Lihu‘e’s Ryland Peahu peeled off scoring runs of 14, 41 and 49 yards to lead the Patriots JPW to a 22-0 showing over Koloa in the second JPW series of the day.
Aaron Renaud was two-for-three in point-after kicks.
Leevi Bethel charged for 11- and 62-yard scoring runs in the first quarter to give the Kapa‘a Eagle Junior Midgets a 12-0 lead over Kekaha in the first of two Junior Midget games.
Kaikea Sonoda returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter, and Rashaan Sonoda ran the ball in for the PAT for the 19-0 halftime lead.
That score stood for the game after an injury to a Kekaha player forced the game to be called after Kekaha’s roster dropped to below the minimum number of players.
