LIHU‘E — Levi Miyashiro, tying for third at the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association Mixed Championship, Sunday, will be part of the 2009 Kaua‘i team that will host and defend its title against the Atlanta Junior Golf Association, Oct. 8-9.
The Kaua‘i team will be hosting the Atlanta team at the 2009 Atlanta-Kaua‘i Team Challenge at the Wailua Golf Course in a 36-hole, Ryder Cup format competition. This will be the sixth time this event has been played since the inaugural challenge match in 1999, states a release from the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association.
The record for the past five challenges is Atlanta 4, Kaua‘i 1.
Mary Bea Porter-King, the KJGA president, and Merilee Giddings, former Atlanta Junior Golf Executive Director, started the challenge as an idea among friends to bring two different cultures together.
That idea has blossomed into a cultural exchange from which life-long friendships were made. Players from the visiting team stay with players from the host team and their families. This brings the juniors to realize that even though they’re from the same country, the lifestyles in Kaua‘i and Atlanta vary greatly.
Each team will pair 16 players against the other in Four-Ball, Foursomes and Singles Match play.
The public is invited to come cheer their favorite team as well as watch some great matches in a Ryder Cup format.
Tee times start at 11:30 a.m. on both days.
Kaua‘i team members include Miyashiro, Sean Mamaclay, Weston Moniz and Justin Uegawa in the Boys 15-18 flight.
Ken Miyata, Reyn Morioka, Braeden Robley and Pono Tokioka are in the Boys 13-14 class. Keith Jose, Trevor Kua, K.C. Loo and Bryden Salvador are the four in the Boys 12 and Under class.
Naea Oda, Kalau Tanaka-Pessimino, Daezsa Tomas and Taylor Viquelia will represent the girls.
Atlanta team members include Tyler Brantley, Dylan Coffey, Justin Mattheis and James Weddington in the Boys 15-18 class.
Nick Fazio, Wyatt Larkin, Bailey Ulp and Boyd Wilson are named to the Atlanta Boys 13-14 team. Matthew Collins, Justin Davie, K.J. Smith and Ryan Stachler are in the Atlanta Boys 12 and Under team.
Wallis Fairvalley, Emee Herbert, Kayla Jones and Carlilse Withers will be on the Atlanta girls’ team.
