Triana Bernal and Jolyn, a tea cup Chihuahua, won the Front Yard Pride Award for September, a news release states.
They live in the senior public housing with the most fantastic view behind Mahelona Hospital on Kawaihau Road. She can see from the airport to Kealia and even some peaks on O‘ahu. The sound of the ocean drowns out the Kuhio Highway noise far below the cliff side complex.
Born in Columbia, she lived in New York City as an entertainer before moving to Honolulu in 1990. She moved to her disabled unit in March 1995. Mornings she spends in the wheelchair and Meals on Wheels delivers lunch. She spends much of her time tending to her flower garden after she’s regained her mobility later in the day.
Her plaque will join her other honors for her volunteer work at the hospital, Malama Pono, and Hospice.
Her beautiful little garden had wind damage lately and as she was cleaning up she fell into her bougainvillea; she has the scars to prove it. She has water falls and statues in both her front and rear gardens.
She’ll receive her award at 2 p.m., Sept. 26, at the Kapa‘a Library. The monthly speaker for the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association will be Ken Stokes, who will discuss “The Sustainability Challenge.”
Nominations for nice front yards can be given to Helena Cooney, chairman, 822-1885 or e-mail Helena1824@aol.com. Living in the 96746 zip code and the resident must do their own work are the only criteria.
