LIHU‘E — The latest edition of the “Kaua‘i Recycling Guide” is now available free of charge at all public libraries, HI-5 bottle redemption centers, Kaua‘i Resource Center, and the mayor’s office, according to a press release.
Individuals and groups can also contact the County Recycling Office for copies of the recycling guide.
“I encourage everyone to pick up a free copy of the Kaua‘i Recycling Guide for comprehensive information on the 3Rs and composting,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in the release. “If we all do our part to minimize waste and maximize resource recovery, it will help preserve landfill space and conserve our natural resources and energy.”
Kaua‘i’s diversion rate is currently 27.5 percent, said the mayor, and he’s hoping that more residents will make conscious choices on what they throw away.
The 22-page recycling guide highlights all local waste diversion opportunities with detailed information on how to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost through a variety of county programs as well as other options.
The booklet also has a convenient matrix that provides at a glance all recycling options on-island and contact information.
A new service noted in the recycling guide is the collection of residentially generated used cooking oil at the Lihu‘e and Hanapepe transfer stations.
The county is partnering with Kaua‘i Grease Trap to provide this service and prevent cooking oil and grease from clogging pipes and getting into drain systems. The used oil collected will be processed at Kaua‘i Farm Fuels and converted to biodiesel.
Also mentioned in the booklet is the county’s ongoing participation in the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program.
All brands of old, worn out athletic shoes, except those containing metal are accepted year-round at the Kaua‘i Resource Center, the Li¯hu’e Civic Center, and Famous Footwear and Déjà Vu at Kukui Grove Center. Additionally, no slippers, dress shoes or wet or damp shoes are accepted in the program.
The Kaua‘i Recycling Guide has been published in-house by the County for the last seven years. About 725 copies of the latest edition were distributed last week at the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair.
