Women In Theatre presents their second bi-annual 10-Minute Play Festival this weekend. Resident playwrights were invited in early spring to enter scripts. Tonight the first five of the 13 chosen features will open the festival, followed by five Saturday. Sunday will feature plays in the first act only with the audience voting at intermission. While the audience enjoys free refreshments those final votes will be counted. The three audience favorites will be reprised in the final act of the festival. The audience will cast votes on the program following today and Saturday’s performances, then drop program in a box for WIT members to count. Prizes will be awarded each night to the person wearing the most amusing pair of shorts. Emcee Richard Porto will act as judge.
Tickets are $20 at the door; $15, outlets; $10, students or buy a three-day pass in advance for $30. The pass may be used all in one night with three friends or divided any way preferable. Moonlight and Music in the Garden

National Tropical Botanical Garden, Po‘ipu
Get ready for hot Latin music, dancing, moonlit garden tours, champagne, wine and gourmet pupu from Gaylord’s Restaurant, Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club and Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort.
Guests will board a tram at the South Shore Visitors Center (across from Spouting Horn) and be transported into McBryde Garden with scenic stops along the way to the Orchard Field in McBryde Garden.
There will be performances and mini dance lessons by professional dance couples. George Garcia, founder of IslaTango in Honolulu, will be the featured performer. He has studied with several of the Tango world’s finest master teachers, being most influenced by the great Carlos Gavito of Forever Tango fame.
Guests can walk to Bamboo Bridge (decorated with lights). Near Bamboo Bridge guests will enjoy champagne and sparkling wine.

Peace Garden

Storybook Theatre, Hanapepe
Storybook Theatre and the town of Hanapepe host the dedication of the Spark M. Matsunaga International Children’s Garden for Peace. The garden will be a performance art venue and outdoor peace education classroom. Expect food, entertainment, arts and crafts booths and activities for the whole family. Musical groups appearing include Espiritu Libre, The Blond Boys, Love Tribe, Millicent Cummings, Sea Dreams and Michael Barretto. Carey and Wendy Valentine will perform and accompany a costumed children’s parade. Costumes available at the event or bring your own.
Other activities include mime artist Janet Carafa, a silent auction, lucky draw tickets, a basketball tournament and plant sale. Kona Road in Hanapepe Town Park will be closed to make room for musicians and all the activities.

Volunteers needed, Paradise Ride

Malama Pono’s signature bicycling event, Paradise Ride Kaua‘i is this weekend kicking off from Island School. Saturday the ride will go south with lunch at Salt Pond Park and Sunday, north utilizing the multi-use path and lunching at Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens. To volunteer call, 246-9577.

Hike the Pihea Trail to Kawaikoi stream at Koke‘e from Pihea lookout Saturday. Hike down Alakai swamp to picturesque Kawaikoi Stream with panoramic views of Kalalau valley and rare endemic plants and birds in Alakai. Strenuous 7.5 miles round trip. Call Jane Schmitt, 826-6105.
Sunday hike the Jewel of Koke‘e. Spectacular hike through the forest of Koke‘e, Black Pipe Trail, Canyon Trail, Po‘omau Canyon Lookout. Cross over Waipo’o Falls for a view of Waimea Canyon to the ocean. Strenuous 7 miles round trip. Call Neil Brosnahan, 346-8460.
88 Shrines

Lawai International Center
Come and experience a tranquil walk on the path of the 88 Shrines. A well kept secret and cultural treasure in a valley that has long been recognized as a healing sanctuary. Enjoy a brief presentation of how this beautiful sense of place started, built by Japanese immigrants in 1904 replicating an ancient pilgrimage of 88 temples in Shikoku, Japan.
Today, it is the only such site existing outside of Japan and is one of the oldest Buddhist temple sites in the country. The center is open on the second and last Sunday of every month or by appointments. The Lawai International Center is a non-profit community project committed to education, cultural understanding and compassion for all.
