Three Kaua‘i natives have been selected to attend the Young Democrats of America biennial convention — which starts Wednesday and runs through Sunday — in Chicago.
Kaua‘i delegates are Kristin Hesse, Ayla Millet and Ian Ross. The state’s delegation will also include three delegates from O‘ahu: Francis Choe, Joleen Iwaniec and Tori Miyagi.
The convention will be attended by thousands of Young Democrats from across the United States and will include a host of training sessions. Hawai‘i delegates plan to use their new knowledge at home in campaigns and various parts of the political process, a news release states.
“I expect the convention will open my eyes,” said Hesse, 17. “It will give me the push and motivation I need to achieve great things for my party, state, and country.”
Hesse, of Koloa, is a recent graduate of Kaua‘i High School and plans to attend Pennsylvania State University in the fall.
A fundraiser featuring Maya Soetoro-Ng, Barack Obama’s half-sister, was July 23 at John Dominis in Honolulu.
“Young Democrats aren’t just the future of our party; they’re our party today. My brother really understands that,” said Soetoro-Ng. “I’m very proud of the delegates who will represent Hawai‘i in Chicago.”
Garden Isle residents who cannot attend the event but still wish to support the delegation are encouraged to send donations to Young Democrats of Hawai‘i, 1050 Ala Moana Boulevard, Suite d26, Honolulu, HI 96814. Law requires that donors list their name, address, phone number, occupation, and employer with their contributions.
“We’d be so grateful for whatever help fellow Kaua‘i residents can give,” said Hesse.
