LIHU‘E — Pake Domdoma’s seven-year project bore fruit, Wednesday.
Domdoma, the coach of the East Kaua‘i Senior softball team, and his team was honored with a commendation from the Kaua‘i County Council for attaining the championship of the Kaua‘i A Division.
“It took me seven years to get to this point,” Domdoma said. “When I got in, the team couldn’t win, but finally, we beat Lihu‘e to get to the championship.”
With the island title in the A Division, East Kaua‘i Seniors head to the state championships on O‘ahu Aug. 4-6.
“We’ve (Kaua‘i) never been in the A Division games, before,” Domdoma said. “Last year, we played in the championship and ended up losing by one run. But, we showed the state that Kaua‘i has baseball players. This year, I’m hoping that we can win that division.”
Jay Furfaro noted that the road to the title was not that easy, the East Kaua‘i team being on the losing end to Lihu‘e during the championship game.
But the team rebounded to take the title 9-8 in an international tie-breaker inning.
“We started the season by ending the first round undefeated,” Domdoma said. “Something must’ve happened to the team because when Round 2 started, the team must’ve been overconfident, taken the other teams lightly, or something. But then, they came through in the end in a tough game.”
Team members include Frank Bukoski, Jerome Hew, Rick Ramones, Mike Curtis, Norman Holt Sr., Skip Schaefer, Gordon Doo, Josh Huddy, Damien Victorino, Larry Ephan, Paul Hurley, Alex Youn, Tom Ganong and Dickie Koerte.
