MOLOA‘A — A Volkswagen van burst into flames along Kuhio Highway in Moloa‘a Wednesday afternoon, soon after Kaua‘i Police Department officers had reopened the road due to a separate traffic incident some two miles away.
A single-vehicle crash just before noon involving a southbound vehicle around the 17-mile marker caused the highway to be closed for around an hour, according to county officials in a press release.
The 17-year-old male driver, the sole occupant in the vehicle, was uninjured but the vehicle he was driving sustained some damage, according to the release.
Following the crash, police closed the southbound lane in the area for about an hour and were preparing to leave the scene when they received a call about the vehicle fire near mile marker 19.
The female driver, who was the only occupant in the Volkswagen van, was uninjured but the van was destroyed.
Both lanes of the highway near mile marker 19 were closed at around 1:27 p.m. after the van caught on fire and were reopened at approximately 2:45 p.m., according to the release.
