YWCA Girls Zone joins forces with Inside Out Fitness and Tri-Hara martial arts instructor Marko Kowalski to present a mother-daughter self-defense workshop. Kowalski uses a series of stretches to explore the mind-body connection in order to generate more power from the core and build confidence in the practitioner. The workshop will cover basic martial arts defense techniques and strategies for preventing harmful situations. All women are encouraged to attend. Beverages and light pupu will be provided. Cost is $25 per person or $40 per couple. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the YWCA Girls Zone program. Kowalski teaches regularly at Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center and Hilton Resort. Celebrating 2009 as “The Year of Hawaiian Music.” Attendees who sign-up for the entire four-day event will participate in daily activities that include song writing seminars, panel discussions, “open mic” sessions, a song-writing contest and one-on-one meetings with professional publishers, producers and other music industry executives from throughout Hawai‘i, as well as Nashville and Los Angeles. Two evening concerts are open to the general public from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 1 in the main ballroom. July 31 is “Hawaiian Music Night” with performances by Jake Shimabukuro, Kenneth Makuakane, John Keawe, Charles Brotman with Kohala, Paula Fuga with Mike Love and Walt Keale. August 1 concludes the festival with a “Pau Hana Concert” that includes performances by visiting mainland staff and some Hana Hou performances by the Hawaiian staff.
