KALAHEO — Tab Matsumoto fired a string of three-balls in the second period to pull Illmatic out of a 10-10 deadlock in the second of two Boys 18 and Over matches, Sunday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Matsumoto got help from the Lindsey brothers: Matthew, Kawelo “Spam” and Mike, as the trio combined for 31 points to lead Illmatic to a 47-39 win over Notorious in Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association games.
Earlier in the night, Mixed Plate outshot Team 1, 22-17 in the second half, but came up short 40-38.
Trent Thompson finished with a game-high 14 points, a dozen coming in the first half, to lead the Mixed Plate effort.
He got help from Kekoa Colipano adding a trey in the third period en route to his game-total eight points, all coming in the second half.
“We had another close one,” said Jed Balmidiano, following the win. He finished with six points in the win that got 10 points from Kalen Abihai, including a pair from outside the three-point arc. Brendan McDaniels finished with eight points.
Notorious stayed close to Illmatic with the three-ball, Silas Tacsiat leading the game with 16 points, a dozen coming from the four three-balls he launched.
But that effort fell short as a last-second try from beyond half court bounced empty at the buzzer.
Lester Alacar added 10 for Notorious, including a pair of treys in the final period after the team’s driver, Russell Bocalbos went down hard late in the game.
Illmatic got 11 points from the youngest Lindsey boy, Kawelo “Spam,” the other two brothers, Matthew and Mike, each adding 10 points to spark the Illmatic game. In his total, Kawelo had three from outside the three-point arc.
Kapua Chandler, the strong ball handler for the Kilauea Hui, and Layna Christian each finished with 13 points to lead the Hui to its first win on a 45-33 note against Wailua, Saturday afternoon at the Bernice Hundley gym.
Sarah Tangalin added 10 points in the victory.
Kathleen Cadiente sparked the way for Wailua with nine points, getting help from Hanalei Gomes who finished with eight points.
Virginia Aguilar led Pop It with 10 points in the blueshirts’ one-point win, 27-26, against the F-N-G girls in the second Girls 18 and Over match, Saturday. Ashlee Vea added eight points in the win that keeps Pop It undefeated in the league.
Carie Inouye finished with nine points and Cory Arashiro added six points for the F-N-G.
