PUHI — The Kalepa Hillsiders will face Ali‘i Basketball for the finals of the Boys 14 Under division, and Team Central will face the NJB Warriors for the title of the 2009 Merv Lopes Kaua‘i Hoops Classic.
The finals pairings were determined late Saturday as playoffs were finalized at the Island School gym.
Kaili Schumacher-Lagundino finished with a game-high 13 points with Kameron Perez, strong guard for the Hillsiders, lending 11 points in the 54-24 showing over Swoosh Basketball to set one half of the BU14 finals.
Swoosh got nine and eight points, respectively, from Majah Taoa and Kyson Smith.
Earlier, Jayden Matsumoto of Ali‘i Basketball carded a game-high 14 points with Noa Kinimaka adding eight points to settle a 38-27 showing over Papalina who got nine and eight points, respectively, from Donovan Harrison and Kainoa Simao. That Ali‘i win set the stage for the finals of the BU14 division.
The Kalepa Boys 16 squad did not fare as well as its BU14 counterparts as the Hanama‘ulu-based squad was bumped from the finals of the Boys 16 Under division by Team Central, 58-28.
Duke Pauli, the third tall man, made his initial appearance at the Team Central-hosted tournament, to finish with a game-high 21 points in the win. The new addition was joined by Lewis Lindsey, one of three strong men underneath, adding 15 points in the win.
Jimar Domingo and Perez topped the Kalepa scoring with 11 and seven points, respectively.
Isaak Janade lit up the boards with a game-high 28 points to lead the undefeated NJB Warriors to a 48-29 showing over the Swoosh Basketball 16 squad to nail the final berth for the championship game of the Boys 16 Under class.
Kapono Cummings, donning the Swoosh jersey for this tournament, was held to 10 points.
