First in state to offer online CPR courses
As the first private-sector CPR instruction business to offer online coursework, Hearts4kauai is reportedly growing despite the current economic climate.
Hearts4kauai has been teaching and offering face to face American Heart Association CPR and First Aid instruction since January of this year.
After meeting with representatives from the American Heart Association about its eLearning program, Steve and Cheryl Ann Farrell knew the choice was clear.
Cheryl Ann Farrell worked as the Regional Director of the American Heart Association from 2007-2008. During that time, she learned of the need for offering AHA CPR and first aid courses from the numerous calls she received in the office. Her husband, Steve Farrell, is an avid surfer and has had to recover drowned victims in the past.
After the AHA closed its Kaua‘i office last August, Steve and Cheryl Ann were already working on their instructor credentials. With the help of their official training center at KVMH, former Kaua‘i AHA Board Chair Dave Walker, and other CPR trainers both Steve and Cheryl Ann are AHA Certified Instructors.
Hearts4kauai can provide a full variety of CPR and related courses for individuals such as massage therapists, early school providers as well as those who need Health Care Provider credentials.
Additionally, their Web site offers other courses such as First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens. They offer special pricing for large groups and non-profits as well.

Alamo and Enterprise expand operations in Lihu‘e
Alamo Rent-A-Car and Enterprise Rent-A-Car — both owned and operated by the Taylor family of St. Louis, Mo. — recently expanded their operations to meet customer demand and enhance car rental service on the islands of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i and Moloka‘i.
Alamo’s new office on Molokai is its sixth airport location in Hawai‘i. Alamo, which has been operating in Hawai‘i since 1984, also has locations in Honolulu, Lihu‘e, Kahului, Kona and Hilo.
Enterprise’s new branch offices are located at the Hilo, Kona and Lihu‘e airports. Enterprise, which has also been operating in Hawai‘i since 1984, will continue serving the Honolulu and Maui airports, as well as 20 home-city locations throughout the islands.
According to Paul Kopel, vice president and general manager for Alamo and Enterprise, the new locations began accepting reservations in June. They have also hired additional local employees and received official blessings during the past few weeks.
Hanalei’s Mediterranean Gourmet introduces weekly luau
The Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant, located at Hanalei Colony Resort on Kaua‘i’s North Shore, is now presenting a luau every Tuesday night beginning at 6 p.m.
The traditional dinner and show takes place in the oceanfront restaurant with seating limited to 80 people, providing an intimate venue and up close and personal experience for guests.
The restaurant has been offering private luaus for weddings and special events for the past two years and received such enthusiastic feedback, it was decided to introduce a weekly luau open to the public.
The evening includes a buffet dinner featuring traditional luau foods including lomi lomi salmon, taro rolls, poi, fresh island fish, kalua pork, and haupia cake, as well as a variety of other dishes.
The program continues with a performance of Hawaiian and Tahitian dances by fire knife dancer Coppin Colburn and his family.
Prices for the luau are $69 for adults; $56 for children age 12 to 17; $25 for children age 3 to 11; and free for children under age three.
Advance reservations for the luau are required. Call 826-9875 or visit KauaiGourmet@yahoo.com for more information.
