Pigment prints on watercolor paper, “Ocean No. 9” and ‘Ocean No. 16,’ are part of artist Bruna Stude’s ‘Empty Ocean’ series. Stude was one of eight Kaua‘i artists with work accepted into the Hawai‘i Artists 2009 exhibit at Honolulu Academy of Arts in May. These two works were also selected for the Tim Choy Purchase Award. Each artist is being featured weekly in The Garden Island. Stude was born in Dalmatia, Croatia and lived there until 1987 when she opted for a life at sea. Forsaking the comfort of her native environs and language, Stude found that photography gave her a new identity as a participant in the life and rhythms of the sea. She also found in photography the techniques to express her own creative sense and impulses. Working as a freelance artist and stock photographer for Omni Photo Communications enabled her to explore the world beneath the ocean’s surface. She has circumnavigated the globe several times and in 2002 moved to Kaua‘i. Hawai‘i Artists is the largest and longest running all-media juried exhibition in the state and is on exhibit in the gallery through August 16.
