MANA — It’s safe to drink the water at the U.S. Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, according to the 2009 Water Quality Report for the base potable-water system.
There were no reports of violations in 2008 at any Navy potable-water systems, PMRF included, according to a Navy press release.
As a purveyor of water in Hawai‘i, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawai‘i is required like the county Department of Water to distribute the 2009 Water Quality Reports to customers, which the Navy did last month.
The reports provide information about the water that has been delivered over the past year.
At PMRF, reports were distributed by the NAVFAC Hawai‘i Public Works Department at Barking Sands.
“There were no violations in 2008 for any of our systems and the water met all regulatory require-ments,” said Arleen Mizuno, environmental engineer NAVFAC Hawai‘i.
“Copies of the appropriate report have been mailed to all Navy activities and civilian customers who obtain water from us, and military and civilian housing residents receiving Navy water can contact their housing office for a copy,” she said.
Annual Water Quality Reports, also called the Consumer Confidence Reports, are required by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
They provide data on the quality of drinking water provided to consumers. These reports include information on sources of water, health effects, compliance status, and other related information.
They also contain a table listing all contaminants detected in water delivered to customers at levels above the EPA’s prescribed minimum-detection limits.
NAVFAC Hawai‘i owns and operates five O‘ahu water systems, plus PMRF’s. The O‘ahu systems are at Barbers Point, Camp Stover, NAVMAG Lualualei, NCTAMS PAC, and Pearl Harbor.
Other O‘ahu housing areas that receive Navy water include the Iroquois Point Island Club, Kalaeloa Homes, and the Coast Guard Red Hill housing area.
Copies of all Water Quality Reports may be obtained from NAVFAC Hawai‘i’s Public Affairs Office by calling 1-808-471-7300, or the command’s Environmental Compliance Office at 1-808-471-1171, ext. 203.
Electronic copies of all brochures are also posted on the NAVFAC Hawai‘i’s public Web site, www.navfac.navy.mil. Select “Organization” at the top of the home page, then “NAVFAC Pacific,” then “NAVFAC Hawai‘i,” then “News” then “Publications.”
