KALAHEO — Kristle Henry finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Kamikaze to a 39-29 win over Waimea in the final Girls Under 14 match, Monday night.
That win in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association summer league put the Kamikaze at the No. 1 seed with a 7-1 record heading into the GU14 playoffs that start Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Joining Henry in the scoring leader spot, guard Mahea Hanie-Grace added six points.
Bristy-Ann Agu and Paige Connelly headed up the Waimea scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Waimea drops to 1-7 on the season for the No. 4 seed.
Earlier in the evening, Nicky Banasihan, playing the small forward position, finished with eight points and Casey Anacleto added seven points to lead Kaulupono to a 34-26 showing over the Gee’s Angels that got step-up play from Raquelle Matayoshi leading the effort with 11 points.
That win came following three quarters of tight defense by both teams, Kaulupono staying just a point ahead of the Angels until the first three minutes of the final quarter when Kaulupono surged to a six-point lead.
Kaulupono finishes the season 3-5 for the No. 3 seed, and despite the loss, the Gee’s Angels end the season No. 2 seeded.
During the playoff round, the Angels will face Kaulupono for a rematch on Monday, starting at 6 p.m. followed by the Kamikaze taking on Waimea starting at 7 p.m.
After three Angels fouled out in the final stanza, the question on coach Cecil Gee’s mind must have been whether or not the Angels’ low post Lauren Claypoole will be back from her study tour of China.
During the eight-game season, the top-seeded Kamikaze, fueled by their pair of shooting guards, allowed 212 points while scoring 298 points, the most in the league.
The Gee’s Angels’ tight defense showed with 206 points allowed while netting 221 points. Kaulupono showed its balance with
260 points allowed while netting 264 points in the season. Waimea rounded
out the boards with 263 points allowed and 163 points scored.
Kerwin Morano finished with a game-high 18 points to lead the Kalepa Hillsiders to a 59-32 win over the G-Unit A in the sole Boys Under 14 match, Monday.
He got help from Paulwin Tommy and Christian Garma with nine and seven points, respectively.
Chester Dikilato and Tyler Fernandez paced the G-Unit with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Heading into the Fourth of July weekend, a single game is scheduled for the Kilauea Neighborhood Center, Thursday when Hanakila hosts the G-Unit B starting at 6 p.m.
Friday night action moves to the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with three girls games on tap. Kaulupono takes on the Gee’s Angels in the first of two Under 17 matches starting at 6 p.m. followed by Waimea taking on the Kapa‘a Titaz starting at 7 p.m. Wailua goes up against Pop It in a single 18 and Over match starting at 8 p.m.
