Nine Kaua‘i students and their adult leader departed for China on June 19 as delegates in People to People’s Student Ambassador Program, a news release says.
From Waimea High School are Amber Duldulao, Tanner Fernandez, Brandi Badua-Robinson, Jillian Yamase, Shanel Layaoen; from Kauai High School are Kelcie Ragasa, Megan Walsh, Kayley Ancheta Scribner; and from Kapa‘a High School is Keri Ann Yatogo. Leader Steve Nicholson is a teacher at King Kaumualii Elementary School in Hanama‘ulu.
Over a two-week period the delegates will visit historic and cultural sites including Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall of China, Terracotta Warriors, Yangtze River Delta, Kun Opera Museum, Beijing Zoo, Imperial Palace, Forbidden City and Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, the release says. They will also experience the Chinese arts of painting, paper cutting, silk reeling, kung fu, and feng shui.
A highlight of their program will be a home-stay visit with local Chinese families to help them gain a deeper understanding of cultural diversity through personal interactions. The delegates will also participate in a service project at the Qixing Special Education School in Shanghai.
In addition to the educational aspects of their tour, the students will make a fun stop at Hard Rock Café Beijing, have opportunities to practice their bargaining skills at numerous Chinese markets in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and become familiar with the concept of foreign currency conversion, using the Chinese yuan as their primary means of currency.
On their way to China, as well as en route back home to Hawai‘i, the students enjoyed day-trips to Tokyo, Japan. The students return home to Kaua‘i on July 5.
People to People is an international student travel program founded by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956, acting on his firm belief that direct interaction between ordinary citizens around the world promotes cultural understanding and world peace, the release says.
