Kukui Grove Shopping Center will be dressed head to toe in classic cars and motorcycles Saturday in a pre-celebration of Father’s Day for the “Just for Dads” car show and expo.
“This is the first time we’ve had a mall-wide car show,” said Jonell Kaohelauli‘i, Kukui Grove Shopping Center marketing manager.
In the past the event was confined to the parking lot and specifically defined as a car show. This year the theme has been expanded to include power tool demonstrations by Sears and games for dads.
Attendees can expect to see between 45 and 50 cars parked in breezeways throughout the mall. Volkswagen Club of Kaua‘i will park their “Bugs” in the corridor by Sears; motorcycle group, Sons of Kaua‘i, will occupy the area by Radio Shack; and between Longs and Jamba Juice will be classic roadsters and convertibles.
Kaua‘i Classic Car event coordinator, Harvey Maeda, has been participating in this event since its inception.
“It doesn’t take a lot of planning,” he said. “I make the calls and they just show up with their cars.”
That’s 50 to 60 phone calls though.
This year there will be one more addition.
“We invited A Tow In Paradise,” Maeda said. “They’re going to have a huge crane up at least 30 feet with a VW bug hanging in the air. You’ll be able to see it up and down the highway.”
Kukui Grove will be presenting door prizes to car owners and awards for fathers for participation in a prize wheel game and a mini-put course. The gaming will be in front of Deja Vu and Underground store fronts. Kaua‘i Community College automotive department will have a table in the food court as well.
This is not an exclusive show and Kaua‘i residents are invited to participate.
“We have a lot of car and bike lovers on Kaua‘i so we’ve opened it up to the public,” Kaohelauli‘i said.
The show will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Participants are asked to meet near American Savings Bank and Sears at the shopping center by 8 a.m.
