Katniss Everdine is fifteen-years-old … or at least she thinks she is. It is hard to keep track of time when you live in Panem and are struggling to keep your family alive.
Panem used to be North America but after the War it was divided into twelve districts ruled by the Capitol. Katniss lives in District Twelve, the poorest and most dangerous of the districts.
After her father is killed in a mining accident Katniss must take care of her sick mother and her younger sister Prim.
Katniss has to hunt animals to survive and without her bows and arrows she wouldn’t be able to feed her family. But now that is the least of her worries.
The Capitol forces every district to sacrifice one boy and one girl to fight to the death in a tournament known as the Hunger Games gladiators of ancient Rome.
The Hunger Games are meant to destroy any thought of rebellion against the Capitol and the ultimate reality show that everyone is forced to watch.
The winner will be awarded fabulous prizes and anyone from age ten to eighteen is eligible. If your name is drawn you are forced to compete.
Congratulations Katniss, you have just become District Girl for the 7th Annual Hunger Games.
This realistic sci-fi thriller is intense, so intense you may find that you have stopped eating and sleeping. I promise you won’t be able to put this book down.
