The winds returned just in time for the race, and so did the juniors, Thursday.
The Nawiliwili Yacht Club Junior Invitational Series was designed to promote the excitement and thrill of sailing to young people and adults.
One of the criteria of the race is that each of the boat’s crew must have at least one “junior,” or a member below 18 years old.
“All of the boards had a junior aboard to comply with the rules of this series,” said Sharon Gibson, the NYC scorekeeper. “One of the teachers at Kaua‘i High School brought a gang of kids in case any of the boats came up short of the requirements.”
But no one went away disappointed as the students who did not get a race boat ride were treated to a run with Carl Stepath on “Whitecap” so they could get a taste of sailing, Gibson said.
“We ffinally had a little bit of breeze to sail in,” Gibson said. “Not a lot, but enough.”
As “Fast Company” left the last series, The Run Series, at the top of the fleet, she returned to lead a three-way fight for the lead under 5-12 knot winds blowing out of the East Northeast.
“Fast Company” stopped the clock at 56:37 (56:42 PHRF) to top the eight-boat fleet, almost five second ahead of second finisher “OZone,” an Olson 30 that crossed at 1:00.04 (1:00.10 PHRF).
“OZone’s” sail set the stage for the battle between second and third as “Lelele,” a Wells 30, challenged, but came up short by a mere .35 second, crossing at 1:00.39 (1:00.28 PHRF).
“Malihini,” a 35-ft cat, was relegated to fourth despite coming in second on the elapsed sail. The catamaran recorded a 59:47 elapsed time, but with the PHRF corection, was readjusted to 1:01.18, staying just ahead of “Speedy,” the third Olson 30 in the race, that finished just .32 second short at 1:01.50 PHRF. Her elapsed time was 1:01.44
“Papa‘au” (1:06.22 elapsed, 1:03.32 PHRF), “Bonjolea” (1:11.00 elapsed, 108.16 PHRF), and “Trinity” (1:01.23 elapsed, 1:09.53 PHRF) rounded out the field.
The public is invited to view the Junior Invitational Series, Race No. 2 when it unfolds Thursday afternoon starting at 5 p.m.
