Kapa‘a High School presented its sports awards for the 2008-09 year at their annual awards ceremony on Tuesday night in the gym.
The top honorees were Joseph Velasco and Mailika Napoleon, chosen as athletes of the year. Thomas Gausepohl and Lyndsey Tom were selected as scholar athletes of the year.
Additional awards for individual athletic achievement were presented for all varsity and some JV programs.
Mark Bonilla was given the honor for co-ed cheerleading. Michael-Alan Drake and Heather Walker were named for boys and girls air riflery, respectively.
Aaron Belmonte was named for boys bowling and Mindi Agena for girls bowling.
Alex LaMadrid was the boys’ cross country choice, as was Kirsten McCracken for girls cross country. Cody Abigania was the boys’ varsity volleyball selection for the spring season. Napoleon, in addition to athlete of the year, was honored for girls varsity volleyball during the team’s fall season.
Tyrus Moises and Sierra Mayer were the boys and girls JV volleyball choices, respectively.
Jacob Kuhaulua was named the varsity football team’s offensive player of the year. Davin Chong was the choice for varsity football’s defensive player of the year.
For the JV football team, it was Brentten Rapozo named offensive player of the year and Kaulana Kaui defensive player of the year.
Kori Kimura was honored for girls softball. Eli Matola and Tania Rames were named for boys and girls swimming, respectively.
Jacob Kuhaulua got the nod for boys varsity paddling. Alex Dorn was the choice from the girls’ varsity paddling team.
Rajan Baliaris was named for JV boys paddling and Kristen Watanabe for JV girls paddling.
Ikaika Fuerte was chosen from the boys varsity soccer team. Larissa Crain got the honor for girls varsity soccer.
Torren Kimura and Shealyn Sugai were chosen for JV boys and girls soccer, respectively.
Kekoa Prem took the honor for boys varsity basketball, while Bradley Coloma was named from the boys JV basketball program.
Sean Mamaclay was golfer of the year on the boys’ side and Malia Saiki took the same honor for the girls team.
Chas Okamoto was named boys tennis player of the year and female scholar athlete of the year, Lyndsey Tom, took the same honor on the girls’ side.
Male athlete of the year, Joseph Velasco, and Shannon Paleka took the boys and girls track and field awards, respectively.
Jondi Das was the the choice from the girls’ varsity basketball team and Mahea Hanie-Grace took the girls JV basketball player of the year.
Tanner Shigeta rounds out the honorees as he was named baseball player of the year.
