Applications for the first Mayor-a-thon 2009 are now available on the Get Fit Kaua‘i Web site, said Bev Brody, the Get Fit Kaua‘i Island Coordinator.
Brody said the first 300 registrants will receive an event tank top, water bottle and breakfast, but they must be present to collect their premiums.
The Mayor-a-thon is scheduled for June 27, starting at 7 a.m. from the Kapa‘a Beach Park.
The Mayor-a-thon celebrates the opening of the full 4-plus mile Ke Ala Hele Makalae, Phase II and will span the distance from the Lihi Park in Kapa‘a to the Ahihi Point length in Kealia.
Starting at 7 a.m., participants have the option of a free two-, four-, six-, or eight-mile walk, stroll, jog, run, or bicycle event.
Brody said she will take the liberty of registering the mayor, Bernard Carvalho Jr., to ensure that he has his tank top and water bottle.
During the event, participants can talk story with the mayor who will be doing the honors from start/finish line.
In keeping with the theme of fun and family, Brody said participants have the option of entering various contests including Best Decorated Bike, Stroller, and participant.
Eventually, Brody is hopeful the event will become an annual one and has plans of inviting Outer Island and Mainland mayors to join our Kaua‘i mayor in the morning event.
For more serious walkers, a training regimen has already been posted for a six-week pre-event program on the Get Fit Kaua‘i Web site.
The Mayor-a-thon 2009 is co-sponsored by Get Fit Kaua‘i, the County of Kaua‘i Department of Parks & Recreation and the Kaua‘i Path.
