The public is invited to participate in free paddling clinics given by Tom Bartlett every Saturday through the end of June. The locations for the clinics will coincide with the summer regatta schedule. Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a, which operates under the YMCA banner, invites you to come down and experience what this sport is all about, whether you own a canoe or not.
“You’ll meet wonderful people, get some great exercise and learn to paddle,” said Bartlett.
The only requirements for the clinics are to be age 12 and up and to be able to swim. The clinics will usually begin at 10 a.m. on most regatta days. This Saturday, you can find Tom on the beach at Hanalei Bay, just to the right of the pavilion. The four following Saturdays, clinics will be at Kukuiula Harbor (June 6), Wailua River (June 13), Kalapaki Bay (June 20), then back at Hanalei Bay (June 27).
Additionally, every Sunday, Tom and a group of paddlers do their Sunday run somewhere on the island from Waimea to Haena, depending on wind direction and where the run will be the most fun. For these runs, participants need to bring their own canoe but will still gain information on how to paddle better and surf the open ocean swells.
If you wish to get on a one-man canoe on one of the above days, or have further questions regarding the regattas, clinics or Sunday runs, call Tom at 652-0406.
