The preliminary round for the 2009 HHSAA Track and Field Championships took place Friday, with the field being narrowed down to those who will participate in the Final round today. A number of KIF members are among those who will continue their run at titles today.
In the boys long jump competition, Waimea’s Torrey Santiago jumped 21feet, 8-inches, third-best on the day and good enough to make the final eight. In girls long jump, Kaua‘i’s Kathleen Cadiente jumped 16 feet, 6 inches to place third and advance.
In girls’ triple jump, Kaua‘i’s Reanna Javinar jumped 34 feet, 91/4 inches to reach the finals.
Jayme Jacinto of Waimea had a time of 16.56 seconds in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles to move on to Saturday’s competition of eight finalists.
In the girls’ 100-meter dash, Cadiente again advanced with a time of 12.80 seconds.
Canaan Bernard of Kaua‘i will be in the boys’ 100-meter dash after sprinting a time of 11.23 seconds.
Island’s Pierce Murphy, KIF record holder, moved on to the boys’ 1,500-meter run finals with a time of 4 minutes, 18.11 seconds.
Murphy also advanced in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 21.14 seconds.
The Kaua‘i 4 x 100 meter girls relay team was eliminated by the slimmest of margins. Finishing ninth in ther preliminaries with a time of 51.55 seconds, eighth place Kamehameha-Maui edged them out by 0.01 seconds.
In the boys’ 4 x 100 meter relay, Waimea will be in action today after finishing in 44.07 seconds.
Jacinto will compete in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles after running in 49.25 seconds.
The Championship heats will be held today at Kea‘au High School.
The Waimea boys volleyball team advanced in the Consolation bracket of the HHSAA Division II tournament by beating Farrington, two games to one.
The Menehunes won the opening game by a score of 25-23, then dropped the second game 19-25.
The deciding game was very tight with Waimea coming away with an 18-16 victory. They will take on Pahoa at 9:30 a.m. today.
