LIHU‘E — John Ryan Dumlao came up with a two-RBI double in the seventh inning to cap a 10-6 win for the Lihu‘e Baseball League Bronco Orioles, Wednesday.
Dumlao, the third baseman for the Orioles, finished with two RBI on two hits and scored once in the opening game of a best-of-three series for the LBL Bronco title.
The Orioles picked up the win on 12 hits while Tyler Manibog, the Orioles’ pitcher, allowed the Braves seven hits.
The Braves, top seeded in the LBL Bronco division, started out strong as starting pitcher Bryton Lumabao took out the Orioles in order in the first inning, including striking out the first two batters.
The Braves also jumped offensively as they hit Manibog for three hits, scoring three runs in their first at-bat.
Tyler Smith and La‘akea Iseri-Carvalho, each finishing with two hits, opened with back-to-back singles followed by Lumabao walking first to load the bases. Kanoa Iwasaki whacked into a two-RBI single to drive Smith and Iseri-Carvalho across the plate, the Braves’ head coach Destry Carvalho holding Lumabao at third with no outs.
Lumabao scored on a sacrifice fly by Kurt Rapozo for the early 3-0 lead.
The Orioles battled back, but could not catch the blue shirts until the third inning when the orange shirts came up with the go-ahead run when Nick Tabura drove Dumlao, getting first on a hit-by-pitch, across the plate for a 4-3 lead.
That was answered in the bottom of the frame when the Braves tied the match when Iseri-Carvalho, singling, crossed on a Rapozo single for the 4-4 tie.
The see-saw continued through the fifth inning, the Orioles’ getting its fifth run on a Luke Garcia RBI single driving Manibog across the plate only to have the Braves’ Lumabao score his second run on a Shane Ogata RBI play.
In that fielder’s choice play, Lumabao scored, but Orioles’ catcher Cal Koga was firm in his defense, putting out Iwasaki who tried to stretch the play with a score.
That was a pivotal point for the Orioles who went on to score two runs in the sixth and added three more runs in the seventh inning while allowing just one run, a Lumabao score in the seventh for the win.
That win saw Manibog go the distance on the mound while the Braves closed with Rapozo taking over for Lumabao in the sixth inning.
The win sets up the showdown between these two teams this morning when they meet each other for the second time in the best-of-three championship series.
An Orioles’ win at the 10 a.m. match will end the season for the LBL Broncos. A Braves’ victory will force a second game later today.
