KALAHEO — The Kawamura sisters, Kristin and Kaylin finished with 10 and nine points, respectively, to lead the Lihu‘e Girls to a 24-9 win over Kaulupono Thursday in the county’s 11 and Under basketball program.
Following the two leaders that got balanced scoring through the six frames, Motu Taumalolo finished with four second-half points and Malyssa Manera was one-for-two on the free throw line in the fourth period.
Schae-Marie Tavita and Melia Okura sparked the Kaulupono offense in the second period to pull the blue shirts to within a pair, 6-4 at the buzzer.
The Lihu‘e defense continued to keep the shorter Westside girls at bay for most of the second half, just one bucket apiece to Tavita and Kairey Bermoy bucket in the fourth frame. Okura’s one-for-two showing on the charity stripe in that same period rounded out the math to nine points.
Tavita and Okura led the effort with four and three points, respectively, followed by Bermoy’s fourth frame pair.
Curren Dillberg finished with a game-high 15 points to lead Papalina to a 42-23 final over Westside Basketball in the first of two boys matches.
Chavis Garma had a dozen points for the grayshirts, who did manage to keep Papalina in check throughout the early portion of the game, but ultimately succumbed to their mental lapses of miscues and turnovers.
Papalina picked up six points in the opening frame, Dillberg netting four and Kaeo Palama adding a pair only to have Westside answer on buckets from Cheyne Kua and Bobby Oliver for the 6-4 read at the buzzer.
Two straight buckets and half of a charity pair from Charlie Rabago kept Westside close in the second frame where the Papalina blueshirts stayed ahead on buckets from Daniel Fee, Jassem Cumlat and Nate Herbig for the 12-9 lead.
Dillberg poured in another four points in the third period when Papalina netted six unanswered points for the 18-9 halftime lead.
But Westside again responded with an 11-6 fourth frame paced by Garma’s seven points and buckets from Briggs Agu and Rabago to pull within six at 24-18. Papalina kept up its balanced scoring as Kamea Palama-Alquiza netted all four of his game total in the fourth period with Dillberg rounding out the math with a bucket.
Herbig, showing the fatigue from coming off football practice, netted his most productive frame in the fifth with three points, but showing just one-for-four on the charity stripe. Dillberg added another four points and a Jassem Cumlat bucket with just three ticks remaining saw Papalina pull ahead of Westside 9-0 for the 33-18 reading at the buzzer.
That Cumlat bucket proved to be the back-breaker for Westside as it mustered just an Agu bucket and one free-throw from Garma in the final frame while Papalina went on to score another nine points behind four Fee points.
Following Dillberg, Papalina’s Herbig and Fee scored seven and six points, respectively. Kaeo Palama, Kamea Palama-Alquiza and Cumlat each finished with four and a pair from Kai Lewis, his bucket coming in the final frame, rounded out the win.
Following Garma, Rabago and Agu finished with three and two points, respectively.
Keali‘i Colipano scored 16 and Matthew Cummings had 15 to lead Team Central 2 to a 39-17 win over the G Unit in the final game of the night. Tyler Fernandez had seven points; Tyrell Aipa-Rivera and Michael Booth each netted five points in the G effort.
Three games are on tap for Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when Kaulupono opens against the Westside Girls starting at 9 a.m.
That single girls match will be followed by two boys games starting at 10 and 11 a.m.
