The day’s major upset occurred in the boys singles division where fourth-seeded Kevin Caulfield of Punahou knocked off top-seeded Matthew Westmoreland of Island Pacific Academy 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Caulfield will now take on Jared Spiker of Kalani to decide the boys champion. Spiker, the no. 2 seed, advanced by beating seventh-seeded Josh Wong of Hilo 7-5, 6-0.
Earlier in the day, Westmoreland topped Iolani’s Marco Kobayashi, the eight seed, 6-3, 6-0. Caulfield knocked off the no. 5 seed from Kealakehe, Kaimalu Cope by a score of 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Spiker turned away Pearl City’s Larson Oliva, the no. 6 seed, 6-4, 6-2. Wong had a grueling match against the 10th-seeded Robin Kiyabu of Punahou, from which he escaped with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win.
In the girls singles division, top seed Kristin Lim of Punahou topped Kealakehe’s Sayo Tsukamoto, the third seed, 6-1, 6-2. She will play the second-seeded Jackie Owens of Lahainaluna in the finals. Owens defeated no. 4 seed Mari Tadaki of Hawaii Baptist, 6-2, 6-3 to advance.
To reach the quarters, Lim routed Punahou’s fifth-seeded Sherise Lum, 6-0, 6-0. Tsukamoto also had an easy go of it against Karlene Pang of Hawaii Baptist, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Kaua‘i’s Sarah Kukino, the sixth seed in the girls singles division, had advanced to the quarterfinals but fell to Tadaki, 6-0, 6-3. Owens topped Kapa‘a’s Lyndsey Tom, the no. 7 seed, 6-3, 6-0.
In boys doubles, three of the four remaining teams were from Punahou, but only one survived the day’s action. Top-seeded Erik Pang and Hiroshi Hikida beat fellow teammates Shaun Chow and Paul Okuda, the third seed, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Their other teammates, fourth-seeded William Chen and Brandon Lee fell to the no. 2 team from Iolani, Kyle Shiroma and Brent Hashiba, 6-4, 6-3.
In girls doubles, Punahou’s top-seeded duo of Ashley Nakaoka and Jennifer Laws survived a tough three-setter against third-seeded Kelly Domingo and Kelsey Daguio of Sacred Hearts, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
They will face off with Nikki Castel and Bobbi Oshiro, the second seed from Iolani who took down Mililani’s Adrienne Hamada and Kimberly Takara, the no. 4 seed by a 6-4, 6-3 score.
In earlier action, Nakaoka and Laws topped Punahou’s Britney Ragunton and Sarah Steele, 6-2, 6-1. Domingo and Daguio bested eighth-seeded Crystal Makaiwi and Sabryna Yates of Kealakehe, 6-4, 6-0.
Castel and Oshiro beat Honesty Ho’opai and Morissa Kahakui of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama, 6-3, 6-3. Hamada and Takara had a tough match before topping Punahou’s Kaity Yim and Kelsey Ann Yamanaka, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
The Championship matches will take place today at Central Oahu Regional Park, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
